When the Roots’ ?uestlove and Black Thought made the decision in 2008 to become the house band for ‘Late Night’ with Jimmy Fallon, they were met with stark criticism. However, fast forward 4 years later and this happens to be the best decision made by both parties. The Roots are making great money with out having to tour and ‘Late Night’ is seeing great TV ratings, especially among the younger crowd as compared to other late night talk shows. Why, you ask??
It’s their ability to bring in great musical talent and provide quality live entertainment from beginning to end. Back in 2008, OC Weekly attributed this to:
“[The Roots’] thick Rolodex, after all, is what ensures they get such quality acts with such consistency.”
A recent article by HipHopDX‘s blogger, Omar Burgess claims that:
“[Fallon] has two very clear advantages. Aside from The Roots, he also employs former Billboard editor Jonathan Cohen as the show’s music booker.”
Whether its a combination of both, ‘Late Night’ has brought in great hip-hop & R’nB acts ranging from Big K.R.I.T., Santigold, Future, John Legend, Ne-Yo, Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Wale, J. Cole, Miguel, Common, Robin Thicke, Gym Class Heroes, Odd Future, Lauryn Hill and the list goes on and on and on…..
Check out this video of Jimmy Fallon “slow jamming” the news with President Obama and the help of the Roots
I’m not exactly sure if this will be her new single but I stumbled upon this new Brandy song featuring Chris Brown. At first, I’m “iffy” about. Its very simple and bordering on childish as far as melody goes. However, a few more listens and I know I’ll be singing this song like I loved it from the first listen. Click the album cover to take a listen.
Honey Cocaine vs. Lola Monroe
I do not support Femcee against Femcee, there’s so few out their I find it absolutely purposeless to beef. However, I do want to say that I listened to some of Honey Cocaine’s freestyles for the first time on Youtube (check her out!) and I feel bad for Wiz for rolling on the L. Monroe bandwagon. And thats why I say congrats Tyga. The new Last Kings princess has a great flow and I actually feel like she’s rapping about something unlike Lola Monroe and others I could mention. It is kind of weird that she just came on the map and she’s already been thrown into Tyga’s arms. But I’m pretty sure it will work out for Honey, Tyga, and the rest of the YMCMB team.
Or rather, where is she going?
If you haven’t heard or seen your tumblr dashboard filled with photos (like the one below) of seemingly fashion icon Rita Ora, now you have!
Ora is the newest Roc Nation buzz from London and under Jay-Z’s management she’s sure to make a splash on U.S. charts. The official music video for her 1st U.S. single “How We Do (Party)” is already out. Ora has also released the video for her debut U.K. single “R.I.P” featuring Tinie Tempah, penned by Drake, and produced by Stargate and Chase & Status. Yea, that’s a lot of high profile names. Click on the links then let me know what you think!
I was planning on doing a “Where Are They Now?” piece for Lil Kim but i’m still not sure whether this counts as a comeback… then again should i only feature comebacks. I mean, I can do failures too… Right??
What the heck does ‘Va Va Voom’ mean??
Here are two different and recent songs: Bassnectar’s “Vava Voom” with lyrical assistance from Lupe Fiasco and Nicki Minaj’s “Va Va Voom” produced by Dr. Luke, Kool Kojak, and Cirkut.
After listening to both tracks, I still have no remote idea as to what Va Va Voom means. So leave comments below letting me know what it means or what you think.
Premiered on Mistajam’s show on Radio 1xtra last night, this is a beautiful track, courtesy of Delilah along with Liam Bailey. Have a listen to this, and try not to get taken away by it! Such a soulful track which needs to be heard by all of you. Obviously, both featured on Chase & Status’ ‘No More Idols’ massive album, on two of the singles actually. Liam on ‘Blind Faith’, and Delilah on ‘Time’ – both two of the stand out tracks of one of the best albums of 2011. Both look set to have big 2012’s!
Khoe Supports Her Sister & Denounces PETA advocate, Christina Cho
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is losing one of its more famous supporters. Khloe Kardashian has taken to her Twitter account and blog to announce that she will no longer be supporting the animal rights organization. Khloe explains that the woman who threw flour on her sister, Kim Kardashian, has ties to PETA, and she’s not going to stand beside them while they support “this kind of behavior.” Kim was attending a charity function last week when a woman named Christina Cho tossed flour all over her. Cho is an animal rights supporter who PETA has previously described as a “superstar activist.”
A source tells E! News that Cho’s flour throwing was done without PETA’s knowledge or approval. PETA tells E! that they are “very fond of Christina,” adding that she’s a “very kind, wonderful volunteer.” PETA says they plan to pay for any legal expenses that may…

PETA is one of those organizations that awes me as to which celebrities they call upon to represent their cause. I was befuddled when they had offered to do an ad with Michael Vick after his infamous incarceration for funding pitbull fighting. Even more shocking was last years PETA ad against fur starring Waka Flocka Flame. They are back at it again this year, with a TV campaign against animal abuse.
In the past, PETA has been associated with Hip Hop acts such as Russell Simmons and k-os. On the other hand, PETA has also gone after Kim Kardashian, Kelis, Dr. Dre, and Beyonce & Jay-Z (all known for wearing fur at different points in their careers).
Noooo not the tree from Pocohantas, but the 11-year-old fashion icon and daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith. She also happens to be a singer off of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label. Willow has recently changed her short blonde due to a green hue.
